As title - Are they beneficial, or power/cost/otherwise would it be better running two of the single GPU cards they're based on?

Generally, dual cards run cooler and pull less power than two full cards :), but often cost more than twice as much :(

The good news is they take up less slots and are easier to keep cool, but I think there is a limit in winders of 4 devices or summat like that.

The 690 looks good on that front.

Not SETI but I have run 2x5970 and currently have 2x6990 on Milkyway. I find they use less power than single cards, even at the same clock speed. The 5970s were ok to cool on air but the 6990 were a nightmare. Even with the fans on 100% they were hitting 100C and I could still hear the fans through 3 walls  They are now watercooled and totally silent as well as 50C cooler :) In my experience more than two GPUs in one system, regardless of whether you are using single or dual GPU cards, is about the limit for air cooling and things get very loud and hot if you put more than that in.
