Dual monitor issue

Well, I have a dual monitor set-up at work on a Dell Vostro 270 machine, both Dell monitors, one HDMI and the other VGA.

Originally they both worked fine when I booted up my machine and would display as needed (desktop stretched across the two), however a month or so ago something happened that meant when the machine is booted it always defaults to the VGA (and smaller) display, the only way to get it back to a dual monitor setup with the HDMI screen is to re-install the Dell device drivers.

This is less than ideal as if I need to reboot my machine, or turn it off at weekends, it then means I have to install the drivers every time.

Does anyone know how I could solve this? I have tried uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them, nothing, I have the latest Dell drivers for the graphics card.

Thanks,

Either something is wrong with the Windows install, or the GPU is going out.

Can you maybe do a fresh install of Windows on a dummy drive?

This happened on my work PC (although with a HP PC), turned out an 'opinion' Windows update changed my drivers for generic ones. I did a system restore, manually unticked the optional Windows update of graphics drivers and everything has been fine since.
