I'm fairly sure this is me being a complete retard, but if anybody could give me a bit of information it would be greatly appreciated.

I have a spare 17" TFT sitting about that I have recently upgraded from, so figured I'd give dual monitoring a go, using an 8800GT. Now, my problem lies in the fact that I simply dont understand what dual monitoring will do for me.

Will I see 2 replicated screens? Will it act like one big monitor? Can I set it so monitor 2 always shows my desktop for example, while I can be playing a game on monitor 1?

Sorry for being retarded :D

Because it might be entirely pointless, and/or being a novice at it I may not realize its full potential by just going in blindly.

I have read websites, but I still cant really get my head around it

To give a slightly more helpful response:

Both monitors act independant of each other if you so wish, so for example you can watch video on one and surf on the other, or expand windows accross both monitors.

Now, they both act on seperate resolutions as well, so for example my 24" is running at 1920x1200 and my 20" is running 1680x1050 meaning that obviously when moving non maxed windows they will sometimes be to big on occasion for the 20".

If you use Ultramon, then you can drag even maxed windows from one monitor to the other, have a second task bar on the other monitor and more. This is assuming you are using the "extend your desktop to this monitor" and not the clone option.

Clone is basically just the same view on both monitors, which is less than helpful if the monitors are different sizes.

Are duals worth it? Try it out. I personally love it, many though if they have large monitors or little space dont feel they need it. Will only take you a few minutes to try though, so worth checking out :)
