So i recently got a new 24"samsung monitor and everytime i lookup i see my old 20" stack away ontop of my wardrope.. i was wondering how easy it would be to connect that thing up to the other socket on my GTX 285 and be able to use them both??

I did just that with a really old 19" CRT i had knocking about. It was quite easy to setup and comes in dead handy when testing for an overclock. I can now run full screen benchmarks and have temp monitoring sofware open on the other which I couldn't before.

So is it just a case of plugging it in and starting up, is there any extra software i need or settings to be changed... plus is it going to work as one large desktop accross two screens or can i make them into two seperate desktops??

Just connect it up to your graphics card, and then in Windows go into the Nvidia control panel. Then there should be some options in there to do with monitors and the 2nd monitor. You might need to select 'Extend Windows Desktop' so that it spreads across both screens. Also make sure you set up the resolutions correctly.

SO this may seem dumb but i have never used dual monitors before now... how do i get the desktop picture on both monitors to be different.. right now if i set the desktop by right clicking on the desktop and doing it through properties it changes both desktops to the same pic...

Here's a better question, is there a way to have two taskbars (in Windows) - one on each monitor?

No, you can't. but there is an excellent little app called 'Ultramon' that can do that for you, it also allows you to display different backgrounds on each monitor, or stretch one very wide one across both monitors etc.
