Dual or Quad core for gaming

If it's going to be kept for 4 years I'd go for a quad, more and more games are multithreaded now. Though saying that it depends on the games you play, if it's just FPS I'd probably go with a dual core.

ha ha.... yea' i just run and gun

Looking at the trend towards multithreaded games - i'd say a decent Quad core would be the best option for future playability. I believe Far Cry 2 was multithreaded - so shooter games making use of quads are coming out.

That said, don't sacrifice speed for the extra cores. The q8200 may be cheap and quad core, but at 2.33GHz and not much cache it is much worse than a cheaper AMD X3 720BE for gaming.

With the price of this amazing CPU at under £150 this week - getting a Dual core seems much less of a sound investment.

Lol, no.

The OP said he wants a CPU for 4 years of gaming, IMHO a quad is his best bet. If he has a budget to work with I can recommend a full setup, but with no other information what I said above is true.

yea i've got my eye on the Athon 955
i just wanted to make sure... dual core now, but quad core for the future

budget is tight thanks to Gordon idiot Brown.... so under 150 quid is looking very tempting
