I have a E2180 dual core cpu which sits in a IP35 mobo and i'm wondering if its wise to upgrade to a higher-end dual core or go for a quad core to use in IP35 or whether i should wait and eventually get an i5 or I7 cpu and mobo when the prices come down a bit?

I have a E7200 currently and was thinking upgrading to a Quad Core S775 until I saw the prices of them and thought **** that

There's another company that make CPU's as well you know dude.

They offer a fairly decent upgrade from your current set-up and wouldn't cost you the earth to do.

Quad core goodness and well over clockable for little over £250

Huh? Why would you get ripped off? If you don't want to use ebay, pick up a Q9550 or something off MM here.

Or just OC your dual, you don't need a quad core really, I should never have gone from a dual to a quad. I saw 0 difference in games etc.

Why would he want the hassle with all that....when he can drop in a Q6600 beat that amd rig you specced and have a faster PC for less?

P35 chipset already in place...nice overclocking on the Q6600

Because he's already stated in his OP that he's may be looking for an upgrade path on new tech (ie i7) I was just offering an alternative.

Check his post count MM not available for him and yes OC'ing his current chip is sound advice tbh.

True :) but by the time he got access I bet there'd be a few nice bargains going :p

By the time he's got MM access I might be selling my Q6600 :D

That spec is hardly an upgrade over a Q6600 for less.

If you are going to upgrade...upgrade....not side step:p

Its only a side step if he's already got a Q6600 :D

In all seriousness, the 2 easiest way are to:

1> OC your current rig.
2> Pick up a cheap S775 quad.

My point about AM3 is that it offers more of a future proof upgrade path at a lower cost when compared to i7.

i'm wondering if its wise to upgrade?
It would be wise to upgrade when you feel your computer is getting slow in the tasks you do *or* your just plain bored with your older hardware! :)

As the others have said it's probably worth getting that E2180 overclocked before you spend out money that isn't needed!

Wow Dutch Guy! . . . jeeez didn't see you in yonks! :D

And yes I agree with your sentiment, most Intel® hardware carries a reasonably large *Branding* premium with it, like Nike® sneakers except the old season stuff doesn't get cut in price! ;)
