dual screen, possible to have 16:10 and 4:3 without distortion?

I have recently bought a Dell 2209WA wide screen monitor, resolution 1680x1050. I have just had my old Viewsonic VX922 repaired under warranty (resolution 1280x1024). The Dell is my main screen, so would like to keep the native resolution, but would like to add the small screen in a horizontal span mode.

Is this possible? I don't mind if the viewsonic changes to a pan view, but I want to keep the main display 1680x1050. I can't seem to do this except in Clone mode.

My graphics card is an old NVidia 7800GT (which I will upgrade to an ATI 4890 when they get quieter).

You can try Ultramon, which I use on my 24" and 19".

That's excellent! Exactly what I needed, and has kept my toolbar on just one screen which is also what I wanted! Thanks!

I've just noticed Windows 7 does this automatically! I'm beginning to like it a lot!

EDIT: Actually, it seems it's the latest NVidia Control Panel which is responsible! Have this installed in Windows XP now too. Displaying as DualView.

Unless I've misunderstood you, XP does this without artificial aids. I have my 20" NEC at 1680 x 1050 and 18" Eizo at 1280 x 1024 and have an extended desktop across them. The double-height toolbar stays on the NEC and applications come up where they were dragged before.

Just be careful, if you ugrade to an ATI card, you may not get the same options (e.g. DUALVIEW) with the ATI software. That is why I stuck with GTX260, rather than going for a 4870.

hmmm, that could be a problem for me. I suppose I could go back to using Ultramon with a 4890, but I would prefer it if the ATI software took care of it! I need to think about my upgrade choice some more!
