dual screen with laptop

Hi all,

Wondering if any one can help me with this, I am currently using my laptop as my main rig, untill I can afford a new computer, got my nice big dell monitor attached.

My Question is can you dual screen with a laptop, but make the laptop screen 2?

Been trying for a few days, with diffrent programs and diffrent settings, but just cant seem to make the lappy the secound screen. The idea was I wanted to use my dell for games/dvd's, and be able to use the laptop screen for web!

Any way any help you can give!

Are you using XP? If so go:

Display Properties ->Settings ->Advanced Tab ->Displays

Then set the TFT to 1 and the laptop monitor to 2. This should do what you want...

Thanks for the reply, this was on eof the first things I tried, the option to do this is grayed out, so you cant switch the monitor numbers!

What setting do you have on the just the setting tab? Have you set extend the display onto both screens?

Yeah I can extend the screen, onto both monitors, but I can not set my non-laptop monitor to monitor 1 if the laptop monitor is being used. The tick box if always greyed out.

you can't do it with ATi cards, nVidia no problems though.

I used to do it with a Radeon 9700 mobile though?

can you select the option "make this monitor my primary something-something"? for the TFT.

my laptop can do this (intel GMA950)

what graphics card is it? and have you tried installing the manufacturers software? they normally have more options than the xp settings.

Can definitely do it with the ATI mobility X800 in my aging Rock XTi. Can have output to 2nd display which I have used regularly or even to tv-out and switch between them to your hearts content.

It can be done with ATI cards! I have it working with my mobility 9700 using omega drivers. For better configeration options i would recomend using ultramon
