I can't find one and suspect it isn't possible, but would like confirmation.

Asus & EVGA make dual socket 2011 boards, but I can't find evidence of overclocking on either. I think the issue is you need xeons for dual socket boards, but I believe xeons are locked down these days. Anyone know different?

Alternatively, if sticking with a single socket system, can any of the eight core chips be overclocked?

Otherwise there's stacks of dual socket boards from supermicro and the like, none of which have any hope of overclocking. Which means really high prices for faster chips or building a beowulf, which I don't really want to do.

Thanks guys

Unfortunately you can't overclock LGA2011 Xeons.. Dual or Single CPU setup, they're locked.

Depending on what you're planning on doing, you could get a 3930K and overclock it to 4.6GHz+ That'll give you 6 cores 12 threads.

^^^^ You can clock em but only by about 7% so Rossi is essentially correct. SB-E 8 Core 16T is round the corner. IVY E later in the year 12 core 24 thread which should be enough for your processing and overclocking needs.

Yeah, but that's just not the same as 16 cores at 4ghz. Doesn't have the gflops or the memory bandwidth.

That's bad news. I wonder why Asus & EVGA have released dual socket boards in that case.

edit1: 8 core SB-E would overclock on a single socket board, correct? IVY-E I imagine is still a bit of an unknown quantity at this point, I'll see if anandtech have written anything about it yet.
edit2: 12 core on IVY-E does seem possible, though not certain. That would be very nice & worth waiting for

Slightly OT, but are the LGA2011 Xeons fully locked like the LGA1155 Pentiums/Celerons/i3's or are they just partially locked like a LGA1155 Xeon E3's or non-K series i7's?

As far as i'm aware, they're multiplier locked, so you can up the bclk a bit. 8 Pack can confirm or deny that though.
