hi guys, ive been looking to build a new machine for a few months, however one night drunk on ebay (everyones been there!) i won an Intel S5000XVN motherboard for the grand sum of £25. this board supports Dual quad core intel xeons.

basically what im wondering is, is it worth paying £300 odd for 2 quad core xeons to build a system of this sort of spec, over current modern cpu's?

should i ditch the motherboard before i end up spending a fortune on older technology, or do you guys recon its possibly a resonably cheap way to build a pretty powerful machine?!

i cant seem to find much on this board on the net other than specs, no reviews etc?

if your going to be gaming then sell the motherboard on and go sandybridge.

if your going to be doing major video editing work, CAD/CAM work, or anything else that is highly multi threaded then the dual Xeons could be helpful. however, only go for the Xeons if you will be doing this a lot because if your not doing a huge amount of this kind of work it just wont be worth the extra cash

Before you do anything check how much it's going to cost you for the memory (Fully Buffered ECC).

If you want to go down this route you'd be much better off (IMO) buying a working workstation from the same era. You'd probably looking at a Precision 690 or similar.

Holy cow how much money has the kid wasted

to much
Way to much, you should have seen my dual xeon build before this, all im saying about that is i won 8 cores of power and a motherboard with 2gb of ddr2 for £60, and got thermal paste in the socket 771, and couldnt afford a skulltrail board.
so i sold the e5435 (i think) as a pair for £225

So you should be able to get the 2 cpu's a lil cheaper than you think, there where a couple of lga 771 quad cores on the clearance lines for £100 each a while back
