ok so my dualshock 3 has arrived today from my dad who is on business in japan.

i only got it because i need two pads and im not paying for a six axis when dualshocks are due to go mainstream in the uk soon.

my questions - for anybody who already has one or knows how it works...

do i just connect it like a sixaxis and it works?
or do i need to update my console firmware?
will it work with ps2 games? [i have backwards compatibility]
will i need to download updates for all my existing games in order for it to work? [and will they download automatically]

basically, is the dualshock 3 already fully supported in the uk?

The updates that added the support for Dual Shock were a while back (I assume you have it as long as your console is upto update). ps2 games support dual shock now as well (maybe through the same update).

For existing ps3 games, there is a load of games that support it already, (I have not had any ask for specific updates, but then it could have been in the firmware update for ps3 or other game updates etc).

For ps3 games, best to list what you own and others can share their experience. I only own about 6-7 ps3 games and I can't recall exactly whcih ones have rumble off the top of my head. I know Uncharted & Burnout Paradise have it, as does UT3 (I think).

You just connect it up via the USB lead to sync with your PS3 then your good to go ideally you should charge it up first, but if you are close enough you can just play while its charging. If you have your PS3 system software upto date then rumble will be supported in PS2 games, as for PS3 most new games support rumble, with the exception of COD4, and many of the new ones have been patched to support ie RFOM, Heavenly Sword. Most games i remember needing updates either do so before starting ie GH3 or tell you in the game you have to update and update from there like Warhawk.

im funny about fully charging new stuff - so i will probably download the dmc demo whilst it charges fully [just got to wait to finish work!!!]

glad my ps2 games will use rumble - trying to play mgs2+3 is really hard without pad rumble at some points.

bit gutted that COD4 will not support it but i guess its still early days

im fully expecting my system software to be out of date as i havent done anything with it since i got my console - may have to sort that out first!!!

RFOM, Motorstorm, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, all have rumble, some may need a patch, which if you have played the games you probably already have. Sega Rally and Skate i dont know and COD4 doesnt at present but the next patch should bring it.
