Dubstep thread

I know I said I didn't really feel most of the circus stuff but this tune is still nuts up loud so it can make it into here from me lol.

Its pretty rude up loud on a couple of subs lol, to be fair cookie monsta makes some quite dirty tunes indeed, proper basslines in there somewhere :)

I started getting into it a couple of years ago with Chase and Status Pendulum and Rusko. Been to many Dubstep nights which have been fantastic. As its become more commercial over the past year with Magnetic man, Katy B etc it seems to be getting crappy. Skream & Benga only played a couple of proper dub tunes and the rest were charts type rubbish the other week

Saying that there are many other fantasic artists, here are some of my Favs

Rusko
Bar 9
Cookie Monsta
Flux Pavillion
Borgore
Genetix
Skism
Doctor P
16 Bit

This is my gripe. Dubstep has never been about high frequencies, never. The sound revolved around sub-bass, minimal percussion and dark menacing beats. I could bet all my savings that 99% of this new NME loving fan base wouldn't like the original roots.

Compare The Goat Stare to Sweet Shop, completely different. Obviously each genre has different variants, like drum & bass has jump-up / clownstep.

Whatever floats your boat.

I'd brock out far more if 10 Dread Commandments VIP or Neverland was dropped in the dance than Big Boss by Doctor P.

As Mala said; "You can't put man in a room with no sub".

A few tracks that are on my mates breaks/dubstep label (Funkatech records plug plug!), be interested to hear what you guys think :)

Music changes. It might not be about higher frequencies but people love explosive music. Dub step has seemed to become the death metal of dance music, which many metal fans I know have taken a huge liking to.

Drop the Goat Stare in a club then drop Pro Nails and see which makes the crowd go the most mental. Guaranteed it will be pro nails. When I first heard it the whole room exploded. I think its this that will slowly filters to the masses, making it more commercial. Sad really, but I suppose thats how music 'works'

Same thing with Trance/Hard dance

I know which one I'd be skanking to! The thing is a DJ who plays tracks like Goat Stare probably wouldn't even have Pro Nails in his box and would probably attract a crowd who are more into the dubstep roots sounds. Music does change, but its not always a change for the best.:p

I don't usually get worked up about these things because everyone has different tastes, but I can't help it when I hear some kids playing the latest Skrillex remix of a Lady Gaga track on their mobile phone saying "LOLOL this is sick, Skrillex invented dubstep".

For me it's all about producers like Digital Mystikz (Coki & Mala), Loefah, Pinch, Kromestar, Kryptic Minds, Breakage, Truth and Old Skream & Benga.

I think people are getting a little hooked up on trying to define dubstep. Just find what you like and go with it.

I've been into sub-bass for a long time, pre-dating dubstep by quite a while and I'm enjoying this resurgence in low frequency stuff, whether you want to call it dubstep or not. Don't have a problem with guys like Doctor P or Skrillex, some good tracks there. At the moment Tek-One win my favour by just having some of the lowest frequency tracks I've come across so far.

Some examples of tracks I like, neither of which you would call dubstep:
Some nice low bass but weird and not remotely dubstep -

Pre-dates dubstep by at least 4 or 5 years, this is sub-bass roots, their first single was about 5 years previous to this and they weren't called LFO for nothing ;)
You can kinda see how we get to dubstep from there though. I've actually seen a nightclub blow their speakers with one of LFOs tracks.

I think a valid point has been made, we have to like what we like and those in the know, know the score with the roots of dubstep and whats truely good and truely "dubstep" as it was back then.

I reckon it'll branch out sub-genre wise soon, theres all sorts of sounds going on. Guess everything evolves. Old Skream stuff used to be pretty brutal with stuff like meta lick etc, and he himself has said never to expect such sounds again from him. His stuff nowadays is quite weak if you ask me. But thats evolution for ya.

Bring back 97 speed garage I say :)

Just listen to what you like I say. You cant really define better, as I prefer some of the newer stuff (same with a few genres of music too)

Skism - Power (of Ra) is a track I am liking at the moment. Rusko - Jahova is also a great track. I might try requesting for Skream to play a bit of old stuff in a few weeks, see what reply I get...

Skrillex is indeed a load of turd (IMO of course)

Agreed with above. Skream is a fantasic producer - Midnight request line, Filth, Stagger. Hopefully he wont be as commercial in a few week when i'm seeing him

WOW, seriously I'm speechless, some of the tunes I have listened to in this thread so far have blown me away.

I never really gave the DnB or Dubstep scene a look in as I was always a fan of Gothic and Metal music but since Metal started turning more mellow and very poppy I decided to try something new.

I first started of listening to DnB and rather like what I heard but then I came across Dubstep by chance and some of the deep-bass sounds are amazing. I am really hooked.

Seen as 20 pages is a rather lot of trawling and one I will be doing soonish, is their a few tracks you guys could reccomend me? I don't mind whether it's older or newer but it would be great to listen to some very dirty beats.

Cookie Monsta - Ginger Pubes is superb.

Cheers Guest.

I've heard Bass Cannon on the Radio, that's got a great beat. I've just listened to Gentix and I enjoyed that one too. I've also heard of Skream but not listened to much yet so will check out those tracks. :).

Ta.

EDIT: Just seen you said you will be seeing Flux in concert too, I bet that will be amazing. I've never been to a gig before but my first will be tomorrow night when I go see Katy B.

Bet you'll hear some great tunes tonight.
