Ducky one 3 tkl - can’t bind volume keys

I’ve tried the instructions and the GitHub page, windows 11 doesn’t appear to have keyboard volume shortcuts like windows 10 had so it appears impossible to bind them.

Has anyone had any success with this?

Maybe try a firmware update, but reading around seems to be a standard issue with these.

Can I ask though, aside from this issue, how are you finding the keyboard in general? What switches did you go for ?

Also thinking of getting one of these so I'm interested in it and came across this...

(If start at time doesn't work skip to 2:40) Apparently the manual is (used to be) wrong when it come to explaining how binding macros works, apologises if you've already tried that as when i watched the video it confused the heck out of me what with not having hands on experience with the KB.

On a side note, have you updated the firmware or had other problems with it as when i looked on the Ducky reddit there seems to be an abundance of people who have problems but IDK if that's a people who are happy don't complain sort of thing.

Same, and same, probably read the same Reddit posts as you.

Ive been giving this some serious thought over the past few days, as £150 is a lot of money for a keyboard...but not going to lie I'm very tempted.

@Murphy

You know the more I read into these, the more I am put off, if you ignore all the marketting youtube videos and so called reviews which are just adverts lets face it, seems normal people have had quite a few issues with these keyboards, people complaining of getting chatter after a few months etc, one said his WSAD keys wouldn't register if holding down shift.

But as you say, it's hard becuase if the issue rate is 1% you can get unlucky on anything, people don't go and make a post theirs works fine, and I guess if its got any serious issues out of the box you can return it.

Yea, I've changed my mind a few times and still not sure if i want to pull the trigger. As a mechanical keyboard noob i bought a right cheap KB and it's awful so I'm committed to spending more and the One 3 seemed to be what i wanted for a not unreasonable price but then i read about all the issues so looked into getting a Glorious GMMK and got so confused with all the options in the OCUK Configurator that i gave up and flipped back to getting a Ducky.

It would be nice if GMMK did a prebuilt TKL but I've read they're unlikely to do one.

e: Ended up pulling the trigger on the Ducky seeing as there's no decent BF deals on graphics cards so I'll let you know how i get on.

Ohh yes please.

I am still contemplating it.......... If I were to go ahead it would be the white one with blue switches which typically, is the only one out of stock, and £25 more expensive. I much prefer the colour though purely aethitics of course.

I only got it this afternoon so I've not had time to set it up exactly as I'd like but to answer the key binding thing, it's confusing as heck but i managed to bind volume down to a key using the instructions in the video i posted, it's not the key i wanted as if I'm using profile 2 my del key now works as a volume down key instead of a del key so I'll rebind it to something more usable like FN + del later. :)

I'm not going to update the firmware as going on this helpful blog post on OCUK they say not to do it unless you're having problems and as I've not had any yet i don't want to risk it due to reading about the problems others have experienced after doing so.

From a mechanical/build perspective it is nicer than my old £40 budget keyboard, feels hefty, the backlight is nice and bright with good shine through on the keys although some of the secondary ledgers (like the %, &, Pause, PrtSc) are a bit off colour/inconsistent, not glaringly obvious but noticeable if you look for it. My biggest gripe is how noisy the space bar is, i swapped it with the space bar from my old KB as it sounded really bad, a very hollow sound when bottoming out, made all the worse for how much better the other keys sound in comparison. The key caps are probably (IMO) the worst part of the keyboard as they feel a bit flimsy, the plastic that makes up the walls of each key cap is defiantly thinner than my old budget KB although i can't decide if that's a good thing or not as it does make the key caps lighter to press but also gives them a bit more of a lighter sound when bottoming out.

In general it's defiantly an improvement over my budget KB, just having a UK layout where i can find keys like | and \ is an improvement. :) Is it a £100+ improvement? On that I'm not so sure, there's obviously diminishing returns and being a mechanical KB noob IDK if heftier key caps would improve the typing experience.

e: Oddly it's only the space bar key cap that's flimsy.

@Murphy

Finally caved, supposed to be delivered today.

Ummmmmed and arrrrrrrrred for weeks, but was trying to type on mine, and a bit of chatter and just awkward, and somehow justified it to myself......I dunno.

Its not so much I can't afford it, but £170 quid on a keyboard is pretty hard to justify.

That is definitely something when the Mrs asks how much you tell her 25% of the real figure.

Having lived with it for a couple of weeks I've got some more stuff to add to my initial impression: One thing I've noticed is the occasional *pinging, by no means all the time and it has to be really quiet to notice it.

*I think that's what keyboard enthusiasts call it but seeing as my only other experience is a budget (under £50) mechanical keyboard i wouldn't know, that's the other thing. Not having experienced what would be considered a money no object keyboard it's impossible for me to know how much better things can get, i know the Ducky is better than my old el cheapo keyboard (two of the backlights on that stopped working after 6 months).

TBH £170 is probably more than i needed to spend to get a quality keyboard, especially as i don't use any of the extra features like the macro keys or any colour other than white. However i like that i can change/replace/mod things on it like the keycaps, switches and stuff if i want to in the future, that and how it doesn't need extra software to be installed and simply remembering its configuration when the PC is switched off at the wall, i feel it's more of an investment that's going to be with me for years to come.

Typing on it now, went for the blue switches, it's nice.

Anyone figured out how to program the RGB?

Messing around with the RGB settings, I can change to "main" colour, you hit Fn then F5 (Red) F6 (Green) F7 (Blue) and you press that each time to adjust each amount of that colour. You can also adjust or toggle the "main colour" to pulse, or flash, etc with Fn + F10.

However you should be able to set "zones", and change the colours of the keys in those "zones". I have managed to record some keys to a zone, however I cannot seem to be able to adjust the colours of the keys in the zone, they are at the moment just random colours.

OCUK says hold caps lock + space to change the colour of the "zones" but that doesn's seem to do anything?

EDIT: Figured it out.

You have to go into the recording session of the keys (so Fn + PrtSrc) then hold caps lock, whilst holding that key down, the F5, F6 anf F7 keys light up, you toggle those which will change the colour of the caps lock key, then if you record which keys you want it'll change those individually.

The instructions on the OCUK website as linked above are wrong.

Ive also found a small quality issue.

The lights on the "zone" set keys flicker a little. Doesn't do it on the "main" keys (even if the same keys are used), but if you setup some some under different colours in the "zones" the keys setup in that zone flicker a bit, not bad you have to look at it for a minute or so, but every now and then random very fast flicker.

Googled online and seem a few reports of this on some reddit posts with no reported way of fixing.

Can't say I've got any complaints. TBH I've not thought about it much since getting it but in a way that's what i want from PC hardware, for it to work well, not break, and not cause problems.

About the only thing i don't like is the position of the keyboard indicators as they're almost impossible to see, that and for the price it would've been nice if they threw in a couple of bags of O-rings.

My favourite thing is it doesn't need to have software installed just to configure it, needing to have hundreds of MB of software constantly running in the background just to be able to use all the features is a personal bugbear of mine (especially those that require you to setup an account).
