Ducting

Well, just to inform you that I still cannot locate an air hose/ducting for the air box. I went to three places yesterday, none seem to have 2.5" just 4 inch plus!

I fitted this a short while ago, I had probs because the filter was from a saxo 1.4 (got cheap) & the open end was bigger than the air intake, so I had to jerry rig with some cooker piping from B&Q.
It makes a nice noise under full throttle now & sounds normal when driving like miss Daisy.
I think its a bit quicker than the original dirty panel filter, or it could be the noise making me think its quicker lol.
I'm unsure if there's enough surface area on the filter for the engine though?

Speaking to Paul/GT3, he reckons that there isn't a great deal of heat soak due to the resonator hole being quite low down.

I'll monitor it, atm i've seen no difference in performance or mpg but i'll be keeping an eye on it.

Before the filter but out the way of the manifold etc and it has got a cold air pipe going to it anyway.

About 240 miles to 30 quid. Round town mileage as thats what I used to only do.

At eg 98.9 Ltr thats 35mpg I thinx (4.54L / gal) , which sounds good.

I get 28mpg with mainly short journeys round town :( mostly slow with odd thrashing & was better with stock filter.
Only get 23mpg with normal UL so I use S/UL which works out cheaper :)

That was my old vtr, petrol was probably 89.9 then.

In my vts, thrashing it about I get about 60 miles to 15 quid.

A bit off topic but...

Which would you recommend:

K&N Panel filter + Drilled airbox (cheaper)

K&N Induction kit (more expensive)

Ive read that induction kits can actualy decrease performance and im better off with a panel filter but my spidey senses tell me otherwise.

Your opinions please :)

I need some ducting as well, 40/50/60 & 70mm sections but some prices being bandied around are absolutely obscene. The link posted above, £23 for a 1m length, if you are buying it in any sort of quantity it should be closer to 50p per meter!

depends on the car. Fiestas for instance generally loose power with a Induction kit due to heat soak. Panel filter in standard box is best, as the standard box gets a good cool air (although its ontop of the engine itself)

the ST version of the fiesta kinda sucks though, its got a very long airfeed with lots of 90degree bends, so the induction kit is good on that simply because your removing all those bends.

every car is different, probably best to say what car it is, and maybe post on a owners club forum too?

Well my car is an Escort MK7 1998 1.6 zetec. The air box is to the right of the engine. I'll probably go fro the panel filter + drilled airbox option as its cheaper and you still get that great sound as you would with an induction kit :)

It all depends what car you have. You could go out an spend £150 on an enclosed BMC induction kit and see no difference e.g saxo vtr.
Put a bmc enclosed, green cotton or raceland with a cone an a scoop on a vts and you will see a difference.

As for mpg, ive just got 58 miles out of a 5'er , mainly extra urban, a bit of foot to metal and a bit of urban.

Thats why id have another saxo again. Great on fuel, cheap to insure and hasnt been much hassle *touchwood*

Oh p.s. the ducting is stupidly priced on the bay also.
