Bought Panasonic PX series plasma earlier this week from an online retailer. Had it delivered to my door this morning. Just opened the box, to see where my hard earned money's gone and I couldn't help but notice, for the lack of better description, the telly is by design square edges all around. No obvious platform, stand, feet, flatness, pedestal, whathaveyou to rest it on, while on the table, in upright position. Talking about not fit for purpose, thing won't even stand on the table. Obviously puzzled I checked the manual and it says "included accessories - remote control, pair of rather cheap batteries, set of two fancy named cable zip straps and one rather short kettle cable". Later down the same page it mentions "optional" pedestal stand, cabinet or wall hanger.

Please tell me that's not right? Please tell me the ghetto styrofoam base from the card box is not the only way of putting it up and testing it tonite. Please tell me I'm not expected to fork out another £129 on a piece of plastic just for the darn telly to stand upright?!!!

theres different models

the WALL model which is what you've got. With nothing on it
the PED model with a pedestal stand
& the CAB model with the cabinet stand.

have you got your invoice which shows exactly which model you ordered ?

It just says TH37PX70BA on invoice. There is no PED, WALL or CAB indicated anywhere on the box either. Fair enough, it was cheap (I believe this is discontinued model now), so I guess I should've suspected there might be "standing upright is extra" robbery, but still, how difficult would it be for manufacturer to make two universal plastic feet for the thing? I'm not likeing this at all. Maybe I shouldn't support this kind of penny pinching with my money at all. Is this common practice among manufacturers?

Its common up until recently with Panasonic. Online retailers like tricking you ;) but should have read description and the usual stuff to make sure it comes with a ped if you wanted a ped (TY-ST42D1WK is the model (its for 37" and 42")) .

as has been said you should have ordered the PED version. I'll tell you now that stand is around £100 and it is built like a tank, as it should be for the weight of that plasma screen. Comet were selling the stand separately, so if you want to avoid another hefty delivery charge go and speak nicely to the sales guy

Actually the lack of stands is in my view a better option (and becoming more common with larger screens), you only buy what you actually need - you do need to read what you are buying though

How many people do you know with flat panels that don't eventually end up wall mounting and having a stand just 'there' for no reason :)

I bought the 42px80 with ped stand, when it arrived the base of the ped was there but no screws and no posts to connect the tv to the ped.
Rang the supplier, they rang panasonic and are sending me the missing parts next week.
So i bought a wall mount for £40 just waiting for it to turn up.

I got a panasonic 42" CAB HDTV, the 1080p version I can remember the model number... Rubbish at remembering stuff like that, but I can tell you, the CAB might have been expensive, but it looks so much nicer, and is built just for the TV, so you screw the panel to the stand, and not with some pansy small screw, four great long screws, on massive bolts that go upright into the bottom of the screen.

not a cat in hells chance the panel will fall of it, and it has an excellent cable management tray and clips down the legs and across the back of the cab.

£250 well spent IMO. I was a bit, erm hmmmm seems a lot of money but even though there isn't much to the stand, it is 'fit for purpose'..

When I bought mine, I convinced the salesman to throw in the ped stand for free :). But yeah, Panny Plasma's are sold in 2 parts, the screen, and the stand, and as said you can opt to buy wall, pedastal or cabinet.

If you do get the Ped stand (rather than simply getting a wall mount) you'll see how much metal there is.. Its probably worth a fair amount as scrap iron :P

As already mentioned, its nice to be able to buy the TV with the stand of your choice, or "naked" if you want to wall mount it. After all why by a £130 pedastal stand if your just going to wall mount ETC. Unfortunalty your retailer didnt explain this properly, and you ended up with the "naked" version.
