Duff Hard Drive?

Hi all,

I had some issues with my hard drive on my 2008 MacBook (2.4Ghz C2D) - freezing on desktop, then when restarting it would hang on the grey loading screen (and not go any further). When re-installing it seemed to take much longer than I remember it doing so, but got there eventually.

Anyway, I ordered a Seagate Momentus 500GG 7200rpm HD from overclockers and yesterday - desktop froze whilst transferring some files, and a dodgy sound came from the HD are of the mac. I took a quick video - you should be able to hear the HD noise on it:

I've had a hard drive fail before (in my PC), and it sounds pretty similar.

I've contacted Overclockers about an RMA etc... but have been told to run SeaTools on the drive - bit awkward seeing as there's not an OS X version.

I'd have assumed that they would have agreed to an RMA instad of faffing around trying to get SeaTools to work - in honesty, I'm not to please about A) the thought of having to do another re-install and sorting out settings if/when the drive fails and B) the amount of time it's going to take sending the drive back, getting it tested, then (maybe?) sending a replacement. I asked about the warranty in my Webnote, but they didn't answer back about that.

So - just to check - does that sound like a duff drive you anyone?

Cheers,

Rich

If it's still not working with a new drive it might be the motherboard that's at fault, which is not uncommon for MacBooks. I'd also try running memtest as well so I could rule out the memory.

Cheers for the reply - I've got MemTest on a cd for PC somewhere - will it work booting into a Mac?

Are there any other test you can do for the motherboard?

Cheers,

Rich
