I'm looking at getting a bunch of Dulux Trade Diamond Matt in various colours to spruce up the house.

I've got a few shops near me that mix the stuff up, but I was surprised by their pricing. The prices below are for a 5l tin (custom colour mix, not off the shelf):
  • Dulux Decorating Centre: £95.23
  • Brewers: £89.99
  • Homebase: £80.00

This is basically the opposite of what I'd expect; I would've thought the big shed would charge more of a markup, and you'd get it cheaper by going direct. Perhaps Dulux and Brewers have better pricing if you're in the trade and aren't so interested in competitive pricing for DIY'ers?

Just want to double check that the stuff from Homebase is the same stuff?!

Watch that, it’s basically nonsense mark up because they claim it’s quicker using the trade stuff - I watched the video years ago so may not have recalled it 100%

You’re better of getting Farrow & Ball paint.

I've recently watched this again. From what I gather the Dulux "Trade" paint is slightly different in terms of how it's able to be applied and potential drying time which makes it apparently worth getting for trades to finish the job quickly (it mentions in the vid that for example a reduced time to apply paint on the outside of a house would mean cheaper scaffold costs. It talks about that because the paint in question was about the weathershield exterior paint).

My first thought on the price difference would have been buying power + number of retail stores. After a quick look seems Dulux have 240+ stores nationwide vs Hombase 140+ Stores.

However, Homebase Stores will be bigger and have more storage space and big chain names like Homebase / B&Q will pretty much dictate pricing base on order volume or just refuse to sell that brand at all. That being said it seems like a price gouge on Dulux not having competitive pricing based on the number of stores they have.

Probably this.

Dulux diamond is good stuff.

Thanks for the feedback all.

Just to clarify, I'm happy to go with Dulux Diamond stuff. I've used it in our kitchen and it's lasted far better than all sorts of paints used throughout the rest of the house, despite taking way more abuse (admittedly I've not tried F&B, but I don't have a Gucci belt so it's out of the question).
