Dumb DVD question

Hi,

I recently built my first computer and its running windows 8. i'm not very techy despite this.

The installed DVD/BD drive isn't playing DVD's and recognises some but not others and will autoplay some discs but not others, I want to install a statistics package and have done so with the same disc on three computers but this one won't even see the disc. Thankfully all games play just fine.

I have checked the drivers for the drive and it says they are up to date.

Does windows 8 have an inbuilt DVD player facility or do I need to download one, in which case which is the best free one?

only windows 8 pro with media center can play DVDs natively.

for a free app, i recommend MPC-BE.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/mpcbe/

do you have other computers at home with drives that recognise your statistics disk? you could share the drive over a network or copy the files onto a usb drive if you have one.

Hi Thanks,

Yes my laptop has the package on and is windows 8, the security around the package is massive so I can try putting it onto a USB and transferring but I am doubtful.

On a quick search VLC to play dvds seems popular, any comments?
