Hi guys,

My rebuilt/upgraded/mashed together rig was originally a Compaq SR1719UK. A new CPU, extra RAM, new gfx, hdd, case, PSU etc later I'm still not sure about one thing...

There are two main fan connectors on the mobo, close to the CPU socket. One is labelled SFAN1, and is located towards the left side (i.e. rear of the case) of the mobo. The other is labelled CFAN1 and is located at the top of the mobo more or less above the RAM sockets.

One PC shop told me CFAN1 was "Case fan" and SFAN1 was the "System (CPU heatsink) fan". This seems (from memory) to be the way HP had it installed originally. The other shop, who fitted my new CPU heatsink, told me it was actually "CPU fan" (CFAN1) and "System case fan" (SFAN1)

The mobo manual is of absolutely no help at all, surprisingly. Obviously I don't want to leave them plugged in the wrong way around (if they are). Currently the CPU heatsink/fan is plugged into CFAN1 and one of the rear case fans is plugged into SFAN1. Obviously you could argue the system is working, so what? But it's a "cool n quiet" AMD CPU/mobo and if I've got the case fan plugged into that instead of the heatsink, that's probably not a good idea lol

Help, OcUK (please) :D

Well I imagine that CFAN1 is the CPU (most of them are placed to the right of the CPU socket) and SFAN1 is system fan. AFAIK there is no harm if you plug them the other way round it's just that CPU fan usually monitors the RPM and other don't (obviously depends on the motherboard).

I would go with neoboy, CFAN1 is for the CPU fan, only down side would be if the motherboard controls the fan speed, it may look at controling the SFAN on motherboard temperature and CFAN1 on CPU temp but a quick look in the BIOS should be able to sort that out hopefuly.

Hope the above helps
Rob
