Dumb question about dumps valves

Appologies in advance if this is a dumb question but i'm clueless about this sort of thing.

I've just bought a Skoda Octavia (don't laugh) with the VW 1.8 Turbo engine. I've always liked the whooshing noise dump valves make, but do you only get that noise when the engine has been tuned up or would it sound just as good on my standard car?

Thanks

IIRC the 1.8T VW engines have recirculation valves which are not dump valves. Recircuation valve recirculate the air into the inlet system instead of dumping it out to the atmosphere..

You can get dump valves for them, they are just not standard.

Dunno if you can run one on that engine, I think it runs on a MAF and not MAP. Sure someone will come in with more knowledge.

Single piston dump valves are a no-go on that engine (Baileys DV24) as they screw up the MAF and can cause overfuelling. No good for when you put your foot back down and it just splutters.

You need a twin piston dump valve like a Baileys DV26. Not sure how they work but they're widely known to be suitable for the VW 1.8T engines.

It helps the spool up time of the turbo as it supposedly keeps the air in the induction system positive instead of dumping it all to the atmosphere, creating a negative pressure.

The difference is probably negligible.

Mike, Baileys dump valves are cheap and cheerful. By no means crap, but they're not the best. I'd have one if I was on a budget.

The 1.8T is a bit of a no go for dump valves really; it has a MAF sensor that whinges when you decide to dump air to atmosphere that it had plans for :p

Never had one so have no experience of them and will never buy one with the amount of people say how much they leak.

I have just sold my dump valve and am back to recirc. Dump valves get on your nerves once the novelty wears off.

A friend of mine recently bought a Golf GTI 1.8 Turbo with a dump valve. He thinks it cool, and "not chavvy!!". He gave me a lift once and the constant "hissssss!" just irritated me.

If you want a more whooshy DV then the Forge 007P is great for the VAG 1.8 20VT. Just look at the SeatCupra forums and there are plenty of folk who have it for the cupra and cupra R Leons.

Somebody fitted a Blitz one to my Supra. It goes "PSSHHHHH"

I'm sure it isn't great for the engine but I couldn't really give a crap on a £300 car.

Put an induction kit on it instead, the "turbo chatter" you get from the recur valve sounds a lot better than the TSSSSSSSSSSSSSH from the aftermarket ones, esp on rover engines ive driven.

You can rest safe in the knowledge that it will break the MAF soon enough :)
