Dumb Question about TFT Sizes

My Question is how they calculate the size of TFT/LCD monitors.

Are all monitors done diagnals or accross the top? and if not which is the best to buy for games and movies etc?

Diagonal.
The best you can afford to buy - also what gfx have you got?

it just that i have seen some monitors which in size are wider.

Widescreens probably... still measured diagonally tho.
So if its a 19" non-widescreen (4:3) it has the same viewable surface area as a 19" widescreen (16:9).

Nope 1440x900 (19" ws res) is 16:9, 1680x1050 (20" ws res) is 16:10.

16:9 is the european widescreen standard and 16:10 is the american widscreen standard i think?

Hmm just did the math and they are both 16:10. Not sure why I thought 1440x900 was 16:9.

christ people come on, do the math

1440 x 900 = 16:10 NOT 16:9

1440 / 16 = 90 * 10 = 900. easy eh?

similarly, 17/19" regular panels are 5:4, NOT 4:3

1280 / 5 = 256 * 4 = 1024
