Dumb question regarding Nvidia/AMD cards

My son has a 8800GTS 320mb card, what [if any] are its current equivalents from the 2 manufacturers ranges, please?

nothing directly equivalent, these is the closest nvidia I could find, the 8800GTS was always crippled by it's low video memory.

From NVIDIA:
Somewhere between a 9800GT 512MB and a 9600GT 512MB, don't know about ATI.

From an ATI PoV the 4670 gives about the same performance at low resolutions and much better performance at higher res due to the extra memory(320mb vs 512/1024mb). The 9600gt would probably be a bit faster than all of them, but a little more expensive.

Why would you want something that performs the same?

Do you mean what would be the equivalent card in the range compared to the range when you bought the 8800GTS?

In which case the 8800GTS 320MB was like a middle range card.

Nowdays it might look a bit like this (for Ati its more difficult to exactly match, but then it always has been)

Also I'm not too sure about putting the GTX295 in other than on a price/perf basis in which case its valid.

Code:
Then Now (Nvidia)	Now (Ati/AMD)
8800 Ultra	GTX 295 HD 5870
8800 GTX	GTX 285 HD 5850
8800 GTS 640	GTX 275 HD 5770
8800 GTS 320	GTX 260 HD 4890
8800 GS GTS 250 HD 4850

Biffa, I had a similar thought but he probably just wants a replacement for a broken 320MB.
I would disagree with your rankings.

Code:
Then Now (Nvidia)	Now (Ati/AMD)
8800 Ultra	GTX 295 HD 5870
8800 GTX	GTX 285 HD 5850
8800 GTS 640	GTX 275 HD 4890
8800 GTS 320	GTX 260 HD 4870/5770(4870 is faster, 5770 has better features)
8800 GS GTS 250 HD 4850/5750

Thats why I asked. Just a bit of a wierd way of wording it, if you were the type of person who bough a 8800GTS then, I'd have thought you would be the type of person to buy a 4890 or GTX260 now :)

Otherwise your mods to my graphs are appreciated, I knew that section (47xx/48xx) would be a minefield :)

There is method in my madness [I hope...:D].

Atm he [12yo] has only a 17" Tv/monitor in his room [tv/ps2/PC].

He cant have another screen in his room due to space considerations on his workunit. The 8800gts seems fine for him atm but I wish to replace it. The games he plays most [CoD4 and WoW] seem fine, so I just want to get him a CHEAP and slightly better card!

Slightly better (£100): GTS250

Much better (£120): GTX260

Stick with Nvidia tbh.

Anything better than those is going to be around £200 (GTX285, HD5850)
