dumb question- whats the difference between...

3770k is Ivybridge, runs hotter. Not that much difference for real-world performance/you wouldn't notice it.


I see from your sig you have an i7 860, it wouldn't be "worth it" to upgrade to current gen CPUs atm.

The 3770K is slightly faster clock for clock, but there's very little in it tbh. Nothing that you'd really notice outside of benchmark figures.
 
The main difference is that the 3770K is the absolute best chip available for the LGA1155 platforms (which is not getting any new chips) whereas the 3820 is the worst chip available for the LGA2011 platform (which is expecting new chips towards the end of the year), plus the X79 LGA2011 chipset has more features than LGA1155 chipsets do.
