How can i find out what version of iphone i have,someone said its a first gen but then i was told i have the 2g as on the back of case is silver with a black bottom, reason i ask as i want to completly reinstall the software but i dont know which one i need in the following site so hoping you can help, iw ould be very gratefull.

You have a first generation iPhone as it has the metal back. However you are getting confused. It is often referred to as a 2g iPhone because it runs on the 2g mobile network and is not 3g, as apposed to the iPhone 3g which despite the name is the second generation iPhone.
