Walked into Overclockers, just for fun bought the 2gb Geil 6400 as it was on offer. But im not an expert on the timings and all that jazz.
I'm running the 3800 x2 at stock, and once again i'm not too expertish on all the overclocking, so its just at 2ghz at the moment.
I put the memory voltage to 1.8, but the timings are 5-5-5-18 as the bios has automatically set them. Now as far as im aware lower timings are better, right? And on the box they're the 4-4-4-12.
So all in all, am i missing out on my bang buck ratio to the extent i should be tweaking the bios?
I understand overclocking is a big wide world and i've flirted with entering it time and time again, but still haven't. Read the guide and stuff though, but still noobin it up.
But yeh any advice, life experience, sex education would be awesome.

There was a wee piece of paper in the carboard box telling you this, no?
Apparently it's set to be slower at automatic settings (for compatability), but can handle the timings on the box if you edit the values in the bios.

timings should be in the bios dude, what board have you got, may be able to help out a little better if we knew this :)

If this is the Ultra low latency stuff (Grey box) then it can easily handle 4-4-4-12 but it needs 2.1v to do it (Geil recommended). Set your settings for manual and fiddle! Use something like CPU-Z to verifiy that you've changed the right bits! Also, altering the command rate to 1T (from 2T) can give a noticable increase in performance.

cheers guys, im on the dfi infinity nf4 am2 one. i had a quick twiddle in the bios when i got the memory like, last week, but the comp wouldn't post for some reason, so i thought i was doing something dumb. so yeh reset the cmos and just running at stock.
but its as easy as just changing the timings and thats it? cuz my understanding is the memory and cpu like tie in. for example i upped my 200mhz to 210 just for giggles, saw my ram was now running at 840, up from 800.
so i know there are a million things about multipliers and all that i dont expect anyone to have to explain it, but is it worth me lowering the timings? surely if they can do it, why should i miss out!

SUPER DUPER.

well while you're all here, is it worth clocking up my cpu a little? cuz i've seen how it's def overclockable, and im running idle at 28 degrees. thing is im still only on stock cooling, and sometimes i leave my computer on overnight, so i figure intense overclocking would be dumb. but is it worth me looking into getting it up to maybe 2.3/2.4 at least?

It certainly is.

We're not called LeaveItAtStockers.co.uk for a reason ;)

Just keep an eye on your load temps.
