Dummies guide needed! What is scraping?

They are apps or functions built into apps that scrape the databases of certain sites to pull and store info about your file. For movies you'll get all the imdb info, posters etc and TV shows will do the same with sites like TheTVDB plus grab all the different episode synopsis.

There are a few standalone ones, only one i used to use was Media Companion but now i just let XBMC do all that itself as it's good enough these days that you don't need a separate scraper dumping files in your folders.

So XMBC does this automatically?

What files do they do this on? Stuff that has been torrented?

Sorry - I really have no idea how this all works.

A link or five hundred might help! *cry*

Have a read of the *** Official XBMC Thread *** in this very forum, and also the XMBC Wiki

Torrented stuff: You have to name it in a way that the scrapers will understand. If you do this then yes, torrented film and TV files will be named and the details populated for you. If you read the XMBC Wiki it talks about this and tells you how to name films and TV series.

Music is trickier. If you download a complete original album then the scraper will handle it okay. Official compilation albums are okay too, e.g. Now or Ministry etc Basically, if you can find it on Amazon then it should be fine. More obscure compilations might require some manual intervention. Individual tracks or ones orphaned from albums might also need to be manually tagged.
