seen a few vids of this, and it's free to play it seems?
has anyone played this yet?
does anyone still playing and do we have an ocuk guild?
is it really worth playing without spending?

It's the US version that's free, and it's well worth a look. You can get away without hitting the item shop till about level 10 if you know what you're doing (equivalent to about level 25 in most other games). Very good community, very different from the usual mmo mechanics, especially the combat.

Download it and have a look, it should stream in the background once you have the tutorial island loaded up.

Heard very good things about it and apparently you can get away without using the shop at all. Worth a punt, I guess.

DDO Veteran here, been playing for over 3 years, been playing on the US servers since Christmas as the EU population is now shocking thanks to Codemasters not getting there act together and not sorting out the frtee 2 play version for EU.

Plenty of EU players over on the US Server 'Thelanis' though.

The combat and character mechanics can be intricate at times, although if you've ever played D&D 3.5 Pen & Paper you'll be able to get a handle on it no problem.

Look me up on my two alts: Arlathen or Asuryen

PS If enough OcUK's want to play and form a Guild, be happy to assist.

I may be interested in joining up as well. I was in the US beta and played for about 6 months after the game went live. I really liked it, but I used to play D&D when I was young.

I think I played the trial ages ago, maybe I didn't give it long enough but it just didn't quite entice me enough to carry on. I also played D&D and AD&D when I was much younger. Had some great games.

In theory, but you need to grind quests a lot with characters on multiple servers to build up shop points. In reality you'll end up getting a few weeks decent play out of it and then probably subscribe, as it's cheaper than buying individual perks (extra character slots, shared bank access, access to premium classes and races) and adventure packs.

That's what I ended up doing, still thought it was worth it. I'm not subscribed at the moment, but it's nice to still be able to log in and do the odd quest

not played D&D paper before but I'm an old WH/40K/EPIC/SpaceHulk player so guess it's mostly the same kinda mindset?
I'll sign up tonight if the clients finished downloading.

I play on Kyhber (sp?) currently have 3 characters, my warchanter bard Caifon capped at lvl 20, my Sorcerer Dinak lvl 17 and my Dwarf Fighter Daggra at lvl 9

A word of warning on classes - caster classes are very, very hard to solo in D&D, at least in the early stages. Easiest are the fighter classes or ranger.

Good starting classes are cleric ( will always get a party) ranger, good soloability, paladin again good if u solo, but dont be put off by sleepery comment about caster finding it hard, with hirelings i was able to get my sorcerer thru lower lvls soloing ( cleric hireling with divine vitality ***) a rogue should be able to get a party not sure on thier solo ability due to the amount of stat pts you need in int, dex and wisdom, charisma if u want to use UMD, leaves str and con low :(, but you can use finesse if ur dex is high ( allows you to use 'light' weapons as dex as the to hit modifier instead of str, but str still dictates the damage dealt.)

Paladins have some good enchancemnets if you have the required stats and rangers also do good dmg ethier as a temepest ( dual wielding weapons) or as arcane ranger ( mainly bow) with their favoured enemies, both clasess are also able to heal themselves from wands at lvl 1, it may take you awhile to find a class you like but the main thing to remember is play something you like and will have fun.

Ohhh side point bard is good to play but takes a different playing style.

Edit : check here for a brief description http://ddowiki.com/page/Classes

Bear in mind a new player won't understand half of what you've just said. You can't buy hirelings on the starter island, and most people wouldn't have a clue how anyway. I've seen people give up in disgust after taking a wizard as their first class, which is a shame.

Paladin or ranger are both easy to start with. Rangers especially are fun. You'll probably end up re-rolling anyway, it's a great game for multiclassing, but only if you know what you're doing.

hmm, any advice on a class to start with? Paladin?

Make sure to read the "paths revisited" thread on the DDO forum.

Around level 14 I started finding it tough to get groups. Good population below those levels, rogue is fun in groups. Arcane casters SUCK at low levels, ie. Before firewall. After that they're machines.

Don't go in with a mind to solo. Group up as much as possible for the best experience (actual, not points). Even on the newbie island. The dungeons are much better on hard or elite difficulty.

You will end up subbing and using the store. Though it's true I have grouped with a couple of sad individuals farming store points. Said players sounded easily mid-twenties...

Oh, and switch the controls to FPS mode as soon as possible. Much better than the default.

Is there much decent/fun pvp available in this game? The game mechanic's do look like they should make for interesting pvp.

Also I'm a caster player so would be going either Sorcerer or Wizard. Does it really matter which I go for?
