Ok i was tinkerin with my overclock and it crashed into windows a few times... and i think my steam had got corrupted so ive reinstalled steam but i still get the exact same error message like steam has encountered a problem and needs to close...i dont know how many times ive completely got rid of steam and reinstalled but the dam thing just wont work!

Anybody have any ideas?

Uninstall steam, and the next time you install it, change the location of your steam games folder?

Done a disk check in windows? (actually do this first)

If the above doesnt work try re-install windows. I had a similar problem with the rockstar online thingy.... It didnt matter what I did it would always say "rockstar thingy has encountered a problem and needs to close"

However the min i re-installed windows I installed the rockstar thingy and boom it worked first time.

yeah i bet a reinstall of windows would fix it but i REALLY would rather not!

I just finished doing an error check on start up and now it doesnt come up with an error message but just opens and closes almost instantely :(

there has to be a fix to this !

sounds like the exact same prob I had with rockstar thingy.... sadly......reinstall windows maybe your only option.

I must have spent about 1week trying to "fix" the rockstar thingy. In the end I gave in and reinstalled windows.

put clock speeds back to normal
uninstall steam
run a registry cleaner to clean all traces left behind
restart computer and install steam in a different folder

uninstall it from the computer and run reg cleaner again.

copy someone elses steam folder onto your computer ...burn on cd or by a memory stick or any other way you like(it works fine this way).

if it doesnt work then there is a good chance some of your windows files have gone corrupt.

This probably won't help if you've done a clean install... but try going into the steam folder and renaming AppUpdateStats.blob and ClientRegistry.blob to something else before starting steam.

erm just tried to open command prompt and it wont open! hmm i guess this is a bigger problem than i expected :(

will try to repair the win xp files using sfc /scannow soon as i find my xp cd :P

sfc /scannow looked like it was gona fix it... but when it finished it just closed like what steam does !

:( really looks like im gona have to reformat but cant do a backup of any sort yet.

Anybody got any other ideas????????

i dont know if it would help but could you get a older version of steam from somewhere? maybe installing a old version and letting it update might fix the problem but its just a guess as you seem to have tried everything already

edit:
have you tried sfc /scannow from safe mode?

sfc /scannow doesnt even load in safe mode :/
and for some reason i have justone system restore point which seems to be on the exact same day this started happenin! >.<
