I haven't really done any night shots like this before. This is the one I was happiest with. The sky wasn't really this bright (it was 11pm), and the foreground was pitch black to my eyes so it was nice to get some purple out of it. The composition was a bit compromised because I didn't bother jumping a gate for better positioning as I still had a way to walk home!

Very nice shot, has an almost painted quality to the sky. How did you focus? was it trial and error or just luck? As I have a hell of time trying todo a decent night shot in focus

Last night I just used the autofocus points on the camera to find a point. I think this shot was focused on a cloud (which were sharper in real life), then when taking photos I turned AF off so the camera didn't try to focus again between shots. I bracketed each shot +/- 2ev, the shot above was the overexposure.

If you're having trouble focusing just AF on something at a reasonable distance (ie the tree or clouds above) from near to where you will take the shot. Then put the camera on the tripod and compose your shot with AF off. If you adjust the focal length after focusing you'll need to focus again. Hope that makes sense!

Are you still in Leamington Rob? If I am correct that is the fields on the way to Kenilworth/Warwick Uni? Its a sea of purple at the moment, am trying to find a good day to go and take some pics, it looks really nice but the weather is a bit rubbish at the moment.

Shame the foreground isnt a bit more exposed but the sky is lovely, if I did that shot I might try to get the one of the tractor trails in the centre of the shot but thats just me :)

I'm not really in Leamington Spa any more, I'm living on campus at Warwick Uni until next Sat (21st). Then I'm off to Uganda woo! I'll be back living on campus next year though. So expect more Leamington shots :P

These fields are in-between Kenilworth and Warwick Uni (Gibbit Hill). I did attempt to enter the Leamington ones but couldn't find a spot. The shot was taken from the road, looking over a gate.
Regarding the tractor trails I didn't even notice the field was purple, never mind the trails when taking the photo!
A good place to get these purple field (which are FULL of bees and wasps by the way) is go to Warwick Uni, park somewhere, then go through the Cryfield Sports pitches, there is a footpath at the back which goes over a small stream. Then you end up right in a field of purple.

Here's another of the purple fields from the Cryfield area(HDR though).
