Decided to give the PC a good dust after nearly 2 years, had the vacume end in a few times but never gone to much effort. The CPU fan was caked in dust and my temp was around 62c, i gave it a good clean and then lost a screw so had to stick the nice new stock one on.

Just checked the temp now and it is running at 42c  and this fan is much more quiet than my massive Zalman fan. The airflow must have been terrible, don't think it could move the heat though the dust very well.

That is quite an excessive difference, but I can believe. I have seen some horrible dust in the past. I avoid breathing that stuff in as well - it's totally sick.

Dust is a killer, low RPM fans help and dust filters. Well worth it, especially if you have pets.

Spare a thought for those of us who ran in the delta high RPM "cool at all cost" fan days - my PC case used to pick up more dust than the household vacuum cleaner and it was louder too.

I hoovered mine out last night when I fitted my new CPu. First time in a good 9 months I'd say. It was pure filth. I'm still sneezing my head off now. Serves me right for doing it in my bedroom I suppose.

i use one of these once every 3 months. :D

i assume you guys are talking about pc vacs/usb vacs, conventional vacs can cause massive ESD in your case and kill your gear! :o

as in, against forum rules big? D:

Yeah 4 lines max I believe. Check the FAQ.

Extreme dust removal As905, I like it. XD I would suggest once every two months if you use it quite a lot for cleaning, that's what I stick to and it works a treat. :)

it does indeed, better than spending hours with tissue paper, cotton buds..etc & its the only effective way i found for cleaning the PSU (you wanna see the amount of dust that came out of my last enermax psu the 1st time i used the leaf blower).

for peeps who are interested here is a youtube vid:

I know someone who's 4870x2 lost the battle against dust and died. When he took it apart there was no air flow what-so-ever and the card overheated. You would think he would learn from the experience but i just recently helped clear out his computer and there was barely any air flow in the case, again due to dust. We ended up taking the CPU heat sink off completely, cleaning the thermal paste off and then washing the entire thing in the sink, it was that bad. A quick blow dry later and all shiny and clean :)

I cleaned out a friends dell computer that was about 6 years old and never ever switched off, I have never seen so much dust inside a computer before. Even the computers in the workshop where I used to work never got that bad!

I always use compressed air if I can, although I have used the dyson many times

Dust filters then vacuum the dust filters when I do the vacuuming , that's my method anyhow. Then it only needs the odd compressed air squirt every now and then inside.

Can't fans being spun by a leafblower (or similar) induce current (just like a dynamo) and potentially cause problems? I always place a finger on fans to stop them turning for that reason.

i have 2 x 120mm metal mesh filters on the side door of my C690 case (all other fans blow the air out so no need for air filters),these filters make the cleaning process much easier because only the finest of dust can get through,a 1 minute job with the leaf blower. ;)

Our Dyson does the job nicely for me.

Also to add to one of the posts above.
I had a graphics card fail on me a few years back, the fan wasn't turning because it was so clogged up, I think it must have overheated lol :)
