im planning on taking all components out
what is the best / safest way to remove dust buildup ?
i was thinking along the line of paint brush or compressed air can

OOo something I know something about :D. I looked into buying a bulk amount of compressed air at Costco since I do a fair amount of rebuilds for friends and family. Long story short I bought a cheap compressor from Screwfix (was on a special £50 with free accessory pack, currently not on but I think they are changing the range soon). I reasoned over time (next 10 years) I would save a fair amount of money since compressed air isn't that cheap and will only get more expensive. As long as you are sensible you wouldn't have a problem (not too much pressure or get too close, make sure its oil free and/or doesn't have an inline oiler). You may be surprised the other uses you can find. plus I just like my power tools :D

EDIT: oh forgot to say I even have a pointy length of dowel so I can stop the fan blades whizzing round :)

Yeah compressed air and paint brush are the only way to go imo. As said earlier compressed air isn't cheap so make sure you remove/loosen as much dust with the paintbrush first.

Paintbrush and a hoover, although be careful not to hoover components directly as you can kill the fan motors!

Always used a vacuum cleaner myself, never had an issue with static over many years. Provided the PC is left plugged in it's all earthed.

Lucky you then I've had friends who have killed various parts of computers using hoovers I would never recommend this. These parts of hardware include harddisks, memory and motherboards.

Stick to the air and paintbrush :)

i know what they say.. but ive hoovered out my pc countless times over 6 years without any problems, just be sensible dont start ramming it against the mobo :) bit of compressed air for them tricky places... you gotta remember the compressed air method just moves the dust.. still need a hoover to suck all that gunk up :p

im definitely temperature anal... if i see my comp a few centigrade the wrong way.. oh dear wheres the cleaning equipment. hardest thing to clean is inside the fins of a heatsink, inside the psu, graphics fan & heatsink, and case fans. Usually get a toothbrush for that job :p

Can't believe blokes would rather **buy** "compressed air cans" than ask their dolls for the hairdryer. I am obviously in a time warp, I'll go back to my Knight Rider Video's ok...
