DV editing :)

Vegas video and a decent firewire chipset in yer pc! I am bit annoyed with the size of the videos you end up with using vegas or any other editing program so I ended up using an ati all in wonder via svhs and then captured mpeg2.

Be aware that these camcorders will always render to avi and the file size is just totally out of whack. Using the ati card I can get a full tape onto a pc and use only 4gigs but doing the same with firewire and default avi the file size was 40gig or so and I had a nightmare editing it!

I have to check exactly whats in the pc I used but it was originally one of those pre-built purple shirt guy things, based on an ati chipset which I gutted and rebuilt. I also tried an audigy soundcard but the firewire wasnt having any of it, the camcorder just wouldnt connect up and would crash the machine.

EDIT: Its a VIA based 1394 one, So I assume any VIA based add-on card would do the trick. I am able to fully control the camcorder using the pc im just a tad annoyed its stuck with avi as its only way to render video... what model is your camcorder?

Just let me know
while I am here, look at my Sig, start new uni course next september, film editing etc
you reckon i should upgrade, if so when

you dont need a new card . the application will give you the choice to capture to different codecs, dv-av is the one i always use as it will give the best quality for editing and then you can convert after the fact for whatever medium you fancy. it is high file size and the capture rate is about 130 MBps.

its best to capture digitally, this way you retain all information before you decide what compression you want to use after you finish editing , so using fire wire to do this , is your best approach.

no dv port just firewire

dont be put off by the large file sizes, this is normal for d-v editing and capturing, there is no other way to go about this without ending up with a degraded copy of what's on your tape.

once you have edited and compressed it, you can delete the big file and still have the backup on digital tape.

yeye no worries about size, got plenty of hard drive space
what am I needing then, a dv port or firewire, two conversations above are clashing

that looks about right to me :D
I use Adobe master collection, so premier pro will be fine yes??
what do you reckon to upgrading??

premier pro is excellent.

your setup looks fine to me.

having your video files on a different drive to windows is a good thing to do too.

so maybe invest is a fast secondary hdd 10,000 rpm would be a good choice

i have two
wd caviar blue 150gb in raid 0 for windows and apps
then a crappy storage drive from a packard bell.
you mean a velociraptor then??
why such a fast drive for storing files??
