Will only a small percentage of Home DVD's read these , i have had a few out from my local DVD outlet and i can only play them in my PS2 , Now the weird thing is my sister has a Denon Home Cinema setup costing over £1000 and it won't read them , but funnily my Dad has an Tescos cheapo £19.99 and they play fine ! go figure !.

Is there any way you can tell (when purchasing a player) that they will read these DVD-9 discs ?

I remember from agesssss ago the description of DVD-9 being a standard single layer DVD ( DVD-18 being dual layer) but if as you say you have hired / bought a standard dvd film or series they should play on all dvd players no mattter what

Can you give a few titles that you have had problems with ( are they rentals in which case if they are well used- and potentially used in faulty equipemt, iie people who used disc before you) this could have caused disc damage

The other possibility is that your sisters denon might require firmware update somehow whereas the tesco cheapo might be more recent purchase and be properly updated.

If its a commercially available disc ( either bought or rental) it should play in 99% of dvd drives , whether they are tv or computer based

edit---just found my copy of Aliens - the Sigourney Waever film - which is a dvd 9 ( it says dual layer single sided-my mistake above sorry)) and this definitely plays in numerous dvd players - I have probably used it in at least three different makes ( Sony , LG - both tv variety anda couple of NEC pc players)

If you let me know of other films or whatever you have failed to be able to watch I migth be able guide you further.

Any recent player / recorder you now buy will DEFINITELY play these discs ( as long as they are region 2 of course - or same region code as the machine you buy)

Denon Home Cinema setup costing over £1000 - must be faulty then.

as dvd-9 is a single-sided dual-layer DVD disc.

being the most commen dvd format used in the whole world (85 %+ of total dvds use dvd-9)

dvd-18 two-sided DVD disc with two layers of data on both sides of the disc

Any recent player / recorder you now buy will DEFINITELY play these discs ( as long as they are region 2 of course - or same region code as the machine you buy)

i will 2nd that

If your DVD player cant read DVD9's properly, then most likely its layer focusing system's failed. Its unlikely to be a firmware issued, as DVD9 is pretty much the 'original' specification for DVD, and I believe the very first commerically available players were based on DVD9 specs.

Now its possible that a lot of players wont handle DVD9 recordable disks, as they are not quite the same specification, but normal pressed disks should be no problem at all.
