Does anyone still have them in your build? I bought a game in store yesterday which I came home with, only to realise that I haven't had a DVD drive the past 5 years. I just always assumed I had one in my setup. Luckily it activated online and I could download the files but it made me realise how irrelevant (for me) such a once integral part of a PC has become.

How about you guys? Still use them?

Last few builds have had no DVD/Blu Ray drive.

I do have a usb external DVDRW for the ultrabook as at times I will be handed files and programs on CD's etc for work.

Other than this, I have no need for one. Most app installers are ISO images and I mount these in Win 8.1 and install from there.

I have a Corsair Obsidian 750d and to have a disc drive in it makes the front of the case look like **** because there's no plate for it so it's sits too far in. Never since I got the case about 2 - 3 years ago (installed Win 8.1 and immediately took out) have I ever used one.

As for a Blu-Ray drive, never owned one and never even thought of buying one partly due to the extremely massive Nigerian Prince style rip off prices (well they were like that when I built my PC)

Had a blu ray drive but got rid of it last year. Use a usb flash drive for some things now. But with a lot if games being downloads now, I'm hampered a bit by a poor adsl connection. That's where I miss an optical drive.

Yep still have two drives in mind, both are actually blu-ray drives but thats more by accident than design!

I understand the not having them if it affects the look of your case, but for the sake of an extra £45 or so for a blu-ray player and a DVD burner I find it really handy to have the ability to do disc to disc copies on the occasion that I do need them.

Same as Kidge, only use it to rip a blu-ray every now and then. Actually, I use it to burn an mp3 disc every now to rip to the hdd in the car.

Other than rips, I do use it to install the odd OS. I like having the OS on a DVD. Also for backups. As if you get corruption or a virus it can travel through all your HD's backups and data except where its read only. (DVD). Saved my bacon once or twice this. Some corruption on my main drive made its way through all my other drives.

I'm still thinking about a bluray writer for my new build. Would be handy for backups. - I thought they would've been dirt cheap by now

Haven't had any internal dvd/bluray drive in any machine (desktop/laptop) for the past 5 years or so. Just don't see the point for me since I don't do any rips and have an external dvd drive if I ever need it.

I have a BluRay drive in mine that I moved over from my old build. I did take it out for a while but eventually put it back in. I'm not sure I would leave one out now, just is handy to be there if ever needed.

I wouldn't build a pc without a optical drive. For the sake fo £13 it's handy to have one. Don't really use blu ray drives.

Exactly my thinking. For the sake of £15 odd pounds when your spending hundreds if not thousands of pounds on a build, seems silly not to include one.

At my office all the workstations have no optical drives and I have been in the situation a few times where I really needed a CD drive! So for the sake of £15 I just bung one in, in new builds to save the hassle.

I would only avoid putting one in a build if I was avoiding it to make the case look better, for example when using the Corsair Obsidian range.

I've had twin opticle drives for ages now. I would however probably go down to one if I changed my case. That said I can cue up DVD/CD rips which is handy.

I have two in my Gaming rig (DVD & Blu-ray) for ripping & installing disc based software & none in my everyday rig. Having 2 of the same case (LC17) its design makes them a pain to fit so I dont bother with the latter..
