As you can see, I'm not 100% sure where my problem lies, Which is why i've posted in here.

I have a LiteON LH-20A1P-487C 20x DVD±RW x12 Ram Dual Layer DVD-Write (blatant copy and paste :p)

Anyways, It takes around 30-40 minutes to burn a data DVD. Just backing up AVIs. I don't re encode them, Or anything like that, It's just straight data disc.

I'm not sure where my problem is, I'm using Nero 7 to burn.

I do have several hard drives, and i was wondering if it was some sort of cache problem? Maybe the AVI's i'm burning are on my E drive, But Nero is caching to my C drive, so i'm getting bad bottlenecking?

I don't know, I'm clueless I believe. Does anyone have any advise? Or maybe a way of my tracking down whats delaying me so badly.

For the record, The writer tells me it's burning at 18x, So thats extra confusion in the mix. :p

More to add as I just remembered.

When burning a disk, My computer more or less dies, Even music playing through winamp, slows down, and stutters and like slurs.

here's my computer spec.

Opty 146 @ 2.6ghz (Prime stable for 12 hours)
Gskill 2gb RAM (DDR500) - 3 4 4 8
Asrock dual sata2
3 Hard drives, 1 IDE(OS drive) 2 Sata.

A long shot - but does nero have an option for where to store temp files? it could be copying them to that location first (probably C:\blah blah\uuser naem\blah blah\temp)

which would add a few minutes to the process - as i said long shot - not really my field of expertise :)

have you checked your cpu useage when ypou started b urning?
download a free burner and see how it does, it could be nero.

I'm still having problems with this if anyone can help.

I decided to take Nero out of the equation, and downloaded a freeware DVD/CD performance tool. It gave me an average of 2x DVD read speed. I didnt do a burning speed because that read speed is stupidly low surely. And If i fix that i probably fix the other problem too :P

It's so annoying, I managed to burn a dvd first day i got the writer, in just over 5 minutes. Thats a full 4.7gb. I cant think of anything that I would have changed, but all of a sudden, 2x dvd reading, and 30-40 minute backups!? It's a 20x writer!!

:(

As for CPU usage, It's around 90%

They are all DMA but 1, Which is PIO, I have it selected to use DMA is available though, and it still says its PIO even after a restart, So i'm guessing thats not my writer.

As said though, The others are set to DMA, and the problem still exists unfortunately.

I don't know if its a clue, but even when just running a read speed test. The computer becomes very laggy.

I'm going to play in the BIOS a little bit, See if i've got a silly setting somewhere lol.

I've fixed it, I'm a doofus(would say something else beginning with D, but I'm sure swearies arent allowed)

I had it set to slave, It had its own IDE channel, Shared with nothing else, And it was a slave. grrr.

Anyways, Sorted now, I can have blistering 20x Speeds if i hadn't only got 18x discs :P

Cheers anyways!
