DVD drive appearing as CD drive

I want to burn some things on DVD but when I try, the PC recognises the drive as a CD ROM drive. (Whenever a DVD RW disc is inserted) It has only started to do this in the last month as the DVD drive has been working OK before.
If I stick in a DVD (Film) it works fine, yet when I put a blank disc or a DVD that has data info written on it, the drive info swaps to a CD drive and I cannot read or write to it ?

Update, using Nero I can write to a DVD, but still cannot read it as Windows sees the DVD drive with a DVD RW disc in it as a CD ROM drive ?
I can however read this DVD in my laptop DVD drive ?

on XP? sometimes dvd-rs show up as cd drives with random amounts of space used if they have over 700mb+ used which is probably because of XP coming out before dvd-rs, but never had that before.
