Hi all,

My DVD drive has just started to play up. It will recognise CD's but not DVD's.

I have bought a new one, and this is doing the same, i have changed the SATA cable and power cable, still doing the same, i have tried updating the driver for the DVD.

I would also like to say, that when i try to boot from my Vista DVD, this too does not work.

Any ideas or is it a new Mobo?

Thanks
~G

Just to add, i have now narrowed the problem down.

The only DVD's that are not working are genuine software installs, e.g win 7 Home Prem, Win Vista Ultimate, ACAD 2010. And more,

Backups of data on DVD's work

I am so lost, as i need to format this machine and install Win 7

Sorry if i am missing something.

Do you mean it will not boot from disc or not even read the disc.

Was thinking, if you can access the disc you could try installing from usb using this guide.

yeah its a strange one, pc (desktop) works fine and boots to vista,

I am trying to upgrade to Win 7, but the DVD drive only reads cd's and copied DVD's

The Genuine DVD's that i have 3 off, WIN VISTA, WIN 7 and AutoCad 2010 do not work in the DVD drive, and i can not boot from them.

When i put these disks into my laptop that also runs vista they work fine.

Ok, i have copied WIN 7 onto a blank DVD, and have installed. It has worked fine, but i still have the problem with the DVD drive reading the originals. MEGA

Drives just seem to break constantly for me at least. Don't think I've ever had one that's lasted for more than a few months.

It really is weird, i have installed and updated the bios update for MOBO, and the firmware update for the DVD drive.

I have bought a new DVD drive (different make) and this has the same symptoms.

I'm putting it down to the MOBO, but i would love to know why?

Now i'm backing up AutoCad 2010 onto a blank DVD to install. What a pain LOL
