About 6 months ago, the DVD drive in my Dell D800 laptop started to die. It could read most CDs fine, but was having trouble with DVDs, especially the PCgamer double sided ones. And this slowly got worse until I got fed up and bought a replacement drive off ebay. It wasn't identical, but it fit into the laptop fine and worked, so I was happy. Last month, it had some trouble with the PCgamer DVD again, but I got it working and forgot about it. This month, it can't read the DVD at all. Other DVDs were fine, though yesterday I tried with another video DVD and it wouldn't play either.

I put the DVD in, it spins up, pauses, spins, pauses, and repeat. My Computer shows it as nothing in the DVD drive, double clicking tells me to insert a disk into the drive. Unfortunately, I'm away from home until Thursday, and I only have two DVDs to hand, the PCgamer and the video that was in the drive.
I've never handled the laptop especially carefully, but I find it odd that two drives would go in the same way. But aside from a dead drive, I'm not sure what else the problem could be.

The lens doesn't look dirty, I'll try poking it with a cotton bud. Though its been moving around a lot recently, from my uni house to home, then for the last 7 works its been travelling between home and the pub I'm staying at for work.

Usually it is a dirty lens on laptop optical units as they are exposed when you open the tray. I doubt you'd see any dirt on it, would only take a fingerprint or speck of dust to make a big difference. I use lint free lens cleaning cloths to clean laptop DVD/CD lenses and that often is enough to get them reading again.
