Dvd not playing on vista

A mate of mine has a vista pc but it does'nt like to play dvds. it plays for a couple of seconds the stops. an error comes up and say's something about drivers need updating or something like that.I dont think it has the service pack installed and he has no internet connection.The pc was bought from a store so i have no idea could it be a faulty drive?

Vista doesn't include a MPEG-2 codec which is needed to play DVDs. This is because of copyright reasons. Have you installed a software DVD player that includes the MPEG-2 codec?

DVD's should play "out of the box" in WMC. Try playing it in there.
