DVD Playback in Vista Media Center Freezes after approx 10 minutes

Does the picture just freeze, but then the menu still works? But if you click stop or try to do anything else (close Media Center), it completely locks the PC?

I've had that. About every 10mins.

I have since reformatted and I haven't had it since (touch wood!). No idea what might've caused it. Any codec packs or other DVD players installed?

Hi thanks for the replies

The previous tow DVD's I tried were rentals and they both locked up exectly as you described after approx 10 mins.

I thought of screen saver etc. and so tried it again to see if it was exactly 10 minutes using my sons Cars DVD but that ran for 25+ minutes without a problem before I turned it off as I had other things to do.

I havent installed any patches or software so dont know if its fixed or one of those intermitent problems that only happens when you actually want to watch something and not when your testing!

I will try some more DVD's and report back if I find anything interesting.

From my brief testing (that is, just trying to watch a damn dvd!), it seemed to be fairly random. Sometimes I could watch the half hour episode, sometimes it would lock in 5 minutes.

I had (at that time) lots of stuff installed - including Vista Codec Package and Cyberlink PowerDVD. I also changed DVD drive, and that made no difference (that wasn't because of the problem, but I just happened to buy a new one - the new one was SATA, ruling out the crummy JMicron PATA controller drivers).

Try updating your graphics drivers too - other than not reinstalling PowerDVD, that's all I can think of that might be different. And I haven't seen the problem since my format... so I'm hoping I've cured it.
