hi im looking for a dvd player that has a usb connection to play divx movies from a hard drive, preferably a hard drive that does not need a power supply. Its for my mum and she sits far away from her 32" HDTV so i dont think HD is required so as long as it plays divx it should be fine. Also needs to be user friendly and an easy to use remote control. I have looked at a few models between 30-40 quid and the instructions only state they support flash memory so hoping someone can suggest something.

any suggestions ?

cheers

I bought my brother a Panasonic DVD player which was half price in tesco. On the box it does not state that it plays DivX from the USB port but it does as it has played everything we have tried from a 160Gb western digital passport hard drive. It is only £27 for the dvd player. I can't find it on the website but they did have some in my store a couple of days ago.

Provided the drive is correctly formatted, there is no reason any player supporting flash memory would be able to play off a HDD.

This is the model-
Panasonic DVD-S48EB-K DVD Player

http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.210-5524.aspx

the tesco site says it is out of stock and is back up to £55.94 but my local tesco still has it at £27.97. i suspect it is discontinued stock so once they are gone at that price they won't get any more in.

In the description it says 'DivX formatted discs are also compatible' but it does play them through the front USB port too. Just read the reviews on that tesco site.

I got three a few years ago from overclockers they were called Sum vision phoenix DVD player.

Plays from USB External HD (not sure but I think it had to be formatted FAT32 but I maybe confusing that with my PS3)

Plays DIVx fine. Got the other 2 for family members as a great way of being able to view stuff on USB thumb drives.

Good DVD player. Upscales etc.

Think I paid about £30 -£40 for the players.

Looking at it now.

It says on the bottome. DVD/CD/VCD/MP3/DIVX/KODAK Picture/MPEG4 player.

also has a card reader MS/SD/MMC card

HDMI output, digital COAX and optical outputs. everything.

i called my local tesco and they had them in stock at 44 quid, so i ended up reserving it at currys for 35 quid and ordered an iomega 320gb portable hard drive too. I just like confirmation that the one i buy does what i want so thanks for confirming that for me and getting me the model number.
