Hey guys,

I have a few DVD-Rs that I have used in the past as a back up for my music. I have just put one in my macbook to try and retrieve the files on it, however, when I do, all I get is a untitled DVD showing up in my bar, and no access to all the files that are on it. Does anyone know how I get these files from the DVD? I cant even see them anywhere. I know the info is on there, as its telling me there is only 15mb of free space on the DVD.

I know I've had problems before burning data discs on Windows and then trying to get the files on Mac. Eventually I ended up downloading Burn and selecting the platform from the drop down menu. There's a couple options.

  • Mac (HFS+)
  • PC (Joliet)
  • Mac & PC (I use this option when burning things on Mac to make sure data is accessible on both platforms).
  • DVD (UDF)
  • Advanced

If you have access to a Windows machine, get the files off it there, transfer them to a USB stick or something and transfer them that way. Just make sure the USB stick is formatted to a filesystem both Mac and PC can read and write to. Also check your burning software to see if there is an option for burning data so it is readable on both platforms.

InfraRecorder was the software I used to use on Windows for burning discs. It's been a while since I used it so I'm not sure if it can burn data so it's readable by Mac.

I don't have any access to a windows machine which sucks. So Im not quite sure how I'm going to get them of now. I won't be doing any more burning from a windows machine as I got rid of it, and upgraded.

Silly!

I did the same with a lot of music when I moved to Mac. I had to borrow my brothers laptop, put all the data on his laptop from the discs, get myself a USB stick, format that to make sure it could be read by both machines and then transfer the data over. And as I only had a 4GB USB stick, it took a while as I had to put stuff on, transfer it, wipe the USB stick, put more stuff on... rinse and repeat until I was done.

I know the DVDs play in my playstation 3. I wonder if I could copy them to an external hard drive via the playstation, and then to the Mac...long way round but hmmmm...

There's options in the PS3 settings pane somewhere that you can set what to import the files as. So if they're all 320kbps MP3 or iTunes AAC and you want them to stay that way make sure you adjust that before importing.

Edit: I suppose that's only relevant if you're ripping from an audio CD though as opposed to importing data files already ripped.
