Can anyone recommend a DVD ripper for Windows Vista? I've tried a few and many seem to be very user un-friendly, or simply don't work at all.

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks,

Michael.

Would like to know the same please. I installed DVD Decyrptor on my vista ultimate, however it loaded and seems fine, I just haven't had a chance to test it, worth a try, let me know?

Worked fine for me a few weeks back.

I've tried this but it just churns out .VOB files, and I have no idea what to do with them. At least the other bits of software come out with .AVI files etc.

vob files are the idea

Not really when you actually want to be able to watch the DVDs you've ripped...

EDIT - I think I need to be a little clearer. I'm looking for a DVD Ripper programme that turns a DVD into an AVI, MPG - whatever, so I can watch it on my computer. Much like you turn a music CD into MP3 files or whatever. VOB files aren't much good!

VOB files will open in PowerDVD and you lose no quality over the original. Great if you have the space to store them all.

Ah right, I didn't know you could open them in something. However, I use Media Centre to play my files, so they need to be compatible with that.

install dvd decrypter and rip the dvd's with that.

then get yourself auto gordian knot, read the faq, and convert the files (select the ifo file in auto gordian knot) to xvid or divx avi.

Bingo, thats what I do, encode it 2 passes and 700mb to save space. Took a few hours mind... :o

I tried this method, but I ended up cutting episodes in half. It's The Simpsons DVDs I'm ripping. The .VOB files didn't seem to correspond with the episodes on the disk. There was also one missing completely.

yeah you can watch vob files

media player classic or vlc etc (windows media player probably can too)

You need:
AnyDVD
ImagoMPEG-Muxer - A great quick, easy multiplexer
DVD Decrypter

(Assuming the DVD is not a retail dvd..)

1) Inset DVD and load up DVD Decrypter

2) In DVD Decrypter, click on the "Mode" tab and select IFO mode. Then go under the "Tools" tab and select "Settings". In the new windows click the "IFO Mode" tab. Under options set file splitting as "None". Click Ok.

3) Find the main film on the right. It's normally the longest one and found in the first VTS.

4) Click on "Stream Processes" and then "Enable Stream processes". Deselect all the boxes. Select the first box which is the video, and click "Demux". Then click on the Audio in English with the most amount of channels and click "Demux".

5) Now decrypt the DVD and when it's finished you should have a video file in the MPG form and audio which is either PCM or AC3. All we need to do now is remultiplex them.

6) Open up ImagoMPEG-Muxer and select your video and audio and select your output format as MPG. Click Multiplex.

This method keeps the DVDs original picture quality and sound quality, no loss at all :)
