While probably of minor interest to gamers on here, it appears the DVD version of Railworks (essentially updated version of Rail Simulator) is being put on some type of new style "Ecodisc" DVD. According to reports on UK Trainsim (mine hasn't arrived yet) these are much thinner than normal DVD's and a bit, well, floppy...

As it appears Railworks is a one off install with Steam verification, the disc isn't required to run the game but there has to be a worry if other publishers catch on whether this type of media would survive constantly being taken out the case and put in the optical drive.

If they pass on the cost savings to the consumer, I guess it's OK.

You are aware of how much a DVD disc actually costs right? The things are designed to reduce carbon footprint by less materiels used, the monetary cost saving per disc and thus to the consumer is going to be negligible.

Indeed, dvd media is very cheap now so I'd imagine if anything these ecodisks would be more expensive in the short term at least due to not having widespread fabrication facilities setup.
Also it would appear that they are only single layer (4.3GB) rather than duallayer (8GB) as we see used for many games these days.

I had one of these ecodisks for the coverdisk on a magazine, its a floppy thing. Probably less prone to scratches, but it's so thin it might get a kink in it if abused.

Is this the dvd version of the floppy single records they used to give out with the music mags so many years ago :)
