DVD to AVI

Could anyone recommend a good solid, straightforward, programme for converting DVD to AVI? And preferrably free.

Guys, I'm being really dull. Could someone point me int he direction of a guide as struggling a bit. Want to be able to put my dvd in pc, select output etc then hit go. Will handbrake do this?

I don't seem to get far with autogk, shall have another go tomorrow. I think I'm just being really thick! Do I need to run anything with autogk to convert a dvd to get round protection?
