Hey, i want to backup some of my dvd's to avi format (partially for easier viewing aswell), i dont believe this infringes copyright as im not distributing it etc, its still just for me but correct me if i'm wrong.

Either way can anyone recomend a good method or piece of software for doing this? i want to get the best quality i can without going for 4gb files

Thanks

I would suggest Handbrake for transcoding the DVD's. You may need to use something like DVD decrypter first to remove the copy protection from the DVD as Handbrake doesn't like protected content.

Doing this probably does infringe some UK/EU copyright law but I see it as fair use. I do it all the time to be able to watch DVD's on my netbook which has no optical drive.

I shouldn't think there's anything wrong with doing this as you own the media so how you choose to store it is up to you. Some people do this when creating a Media server in their home.

That said I could be wrong.

Anyone got a sample of there settings for Handbrake, for a Quality/File Size prioity to sit on a NAS and be streamed by PS3 and Xbox 360.

I've got some I'm happy with but I aren't 100% with some of the advanced settings. <<not wanting to hijack thread>>

Organisations like the RIAA, MPAA and so on will claim that it's illegal and what ever else they think it is, but there's absolutely nothing what so ever that they can do.

Considering that there's nothing they can do to people who download such stuff "illegally".

So yeah, they don't like it, but there's nothing they can do, it's your property now.

Booyah, thanks for the copyright education

Handbrake will do this on its own or will it need to be in conjunction with some other software?

Thanks

anydvd to rip the disc to your hard drive first, then handbrake or autogk to convert

autogk will convert to xvid (avi)
handbrake will convert to mkv (better than avi..)

DVDShrink

will rip your DVD's irrespective of copy protection, it will also alow you to either rip the full dvd with menus etc or compress it to your own specification.

However it will rip it into either ISO or VOB format.

Yeah AnyDVD would probably be better as they stopped developing DVD decrypter a good while back and thus it may not handle newer titles very well.

I'm looking to do this but wanted the output files to be <1gb in size so I can make the most of my netbook's 250gb hdd. Just want to be able to watch my favourite films whilst travelling etc. Any ideaS?

Prism video converter, takes the DVD and makes into AVI simples :) and yeh file sizes are ~700mb

With both autogk and handbrake you can choose the output filesize

Thanks for that. Looked at handbrake which makes .mkv files - can MPC-HC play these ok? Will I need some other software running to allow handbrake to 'rip' the dvd to my hdd? :o

To answer my own question... I used DVD Shrink to 'rip' the DVD to my hard drive. I am now using Handbrake to compress it into an mkv file. I'm not exactly using an uber spec machine either so this whole process will have probably taken me a good few hours. Is there really no way to do this quicker (without a mega PC)? I'm gonna be here for years doing this lol :o
