yes I have a desktop, with a DVD/CD in it.

But I would buy a device to do it independently.

These are home made DVD,s with no copyright or "blocking" are on them.

I tried using VLC but its a long winded process and the sound is missing.

Another vote here for makemkv.

But I would buy a device to do it independently.

The market for a standalone device to service people who want to convert their own content is vanishingly small. Computers do what you want, and quickly, and in a lot of cases for zero additional cost. A standalone device would really struggle competing with 'does it for free', and that's why it doesn't exist.

yeah its in constant beta but don't let that worry you. it'll churn it out as an .mkv file. if you want to convert to something else then use handbrake. I think handbrake might do it all if its non copyright dvd that you specifically want as .mp4 or whatever container you want it in tbh

If it is non copy protected dvd then Handbrake will do this. Insert DVD, load handbrake, select DVD from as the SOURCE, select track you want to convert, select the profile you want from the right side. Enter your destination filename and where to put it. Click start. There will be loads of youtube vids demonstrating this.
