DVD to video file for editing?

I have some videos on DVD (This is NOT copying copyright DVDs)

How do I get them @ full quality onto disk for editing in iMovie(MPEG) or Windows Movie Maker (windows codec of some sort)

I need this to be free - if its a full trial for a few days that will do too, as I only have a few to do

But now I have a black border round my videos about 30-50 pixels. black all the way round

How do I solve?
