DVD writing woes !

So yesterday i wanted to make some DVD backups of films i've recorded in avi format. I'm using ConvertX to DVD software to convert and burn the films. But it's taken 6 attempts to burn these 3 films i have, is there something i am doing wrong?

Using Memorex DVD+R RW 16x media on a Lite-on writer.

The problem is that the films always seem to stutter or freeze towards the very end of the film

I've tried lowering writing speed but that didn't seem to make any difference :(

I'm thinking that the blank DVD's are not up to scratch, or maybe time for a new writer?

do they play back correctly on your pc?

use media player classic to play them

-if so, then its the dvd player that doesn't like your discs

They skip on my PC and the 2 DVD players i have :(

Currently trying to find a firmware update for my writer, see if that helps :)

*EDIT*
Ok so i found new firmware, will post back later with results.

Not if he actually wants to get any replies. :p

Have you tried playing back the converted dvd files on your pc before you burn them? Could be a problem in the transcoding.

What Energize says:
Always play back your converted files to make sure they play right before burning.
I normally double click the first VOB file which opens up in PowerDVD, skip through it and do the same for the other VOBs.
If your VOBs skip and freeze on the files then they will certainly do the same when on the disk.
If its only on the disk then try another make of disk.
If it does it on the other disk then it could be your burner.

Means bugger all if your drive doesn't like the media.

If the VOB files are OK on your PC then the fault now lies with the media or the DVD burner is borked.
I always use Ritek G05 dye or Verbatim disks.
I bought 100 non printable Verbatim and 50 printable from OCUK this morning and I will not expect any problems with my NEC drives.
However, just because my drives like them it doesn't mean that somebody elses NEC doesn't.

Thanks for the help.

Just burnt another disk, and it's working fine. I only have two disks left so will be ordering some Verbatim from OcUK in the near future.

As you say if i get more coasters any coasters from the Verbatim disk i will start looking for a new writer.

I use verbatim all the time, come to think of it I got the same problems you did when using ridisk dvds with my nec drive.

This dye is basically a "budget" dye, it will not really give much of a burn quality once written to, your DVD rewriter firmware may cope with it, but the DVD player/DVD-Rom you play it back on may not cope well with it, especially a standalone DVD player. I have used CMC dyes before and found them pretty poor for burning DVD Video Files too.

I would suggest trying something from Verbatim, using the MCC 004 dye, which is a Verbatim DVD+R 16x dye, or something using the YUDEN000T03 dye (from Taiyo Yuden), and burn it at 12x, or if you want to use a good quality DVD-R disc, you can pick up Verbatim DVD-R 16x using the a 3rd party dye from Taiyo Yuden, TYG03.

I have used a lot of Taiyo Yuden blank media (which in my opinion is about the best), both DVD+R 8x and 16x, and I don't remember burning one coaster, they give a very good quality burn, and if your DVD Video Files are constructed properly, they will burn onto these discs well, and give a good playback from any kind of player. :)
