My mate has a pc with onboard graphics. All worked ok and he could watch DVD with no prob. He installed an old PCI graphics card and while his basic flight sims work ok the DVD show strange colured artifacts. Could the card be borked or is it the DVD software?
Im supposed to go fix it at weekend but not sure what the cause could be

Could possibly be a driver issue.

Do you know if the drivers for the onboard graphics uninstalled before the PCI card was installed?

It's worth checking to see if they were uninstalled, if they were not it could be causing the problem.

Hope this helps :)

Had the same problem on a old celeron 433. The onboard i810 DVD playback was great. Got a Hercules Kyro card and the quality was so poor. I think the new onboard jobby's have certain algorithms that improve the picture quality or something that the old PCI card might not have. Or it could be a driver issue, not to sure.

Thanks folks. He decided to install the graphics card himseld. Im sure he did not uninstall anything previously. So I will look at that when I go round. I presume the onboard drivers to uninstall would be in device manager or add remove?
I will then remove his PCI card and drivers and reinstall.
